LG backing off tablets for now, would rather circle smartphone wagons

lg-backing-off-tablets-focus-on-cellphones

LG has decided not to chip in any more tablets to the huge pile that's already out there, and will focus on smartphones instead. It hasn't exactly stormed the market anyway -- with recent tab offerings like the Optimus Pad LTE falling flat -- and has said that the move would free it up to improve its No. 4 spot on the world's cellphone charts. It insists the decision has nothing to do with Microsoft's recent Surface announcement, and says it doesn't compete in that particular sphere anyway. So that's that.

Rozanne Gold: A Father's Day Steak

2012-06-16-0616201207_21_18AM.jpg

While I was "guest host" on Martha Stewart's Cooking Today Sirius XM radio show this week, we covered lots of topics, including craft beer, olive oil from Chile, Julia Child's new biography, Dearie, written by celebrity author Bob Spitz, "genius recipes" with Kristen Miglore from food52, and radically simple cooking with New York Times "City Cook" columnist, David Tanis. It was a great week. We also listened to the "hot chill" music of singer/songwriter Audrey Appleby, whose two songs, "The Garden" and "Ladies Cheap Cocktails," had everyone in the studio smiling and begging for more! Check it out at www.magicdance.com. Audrey's new album soon to be released is called Ladies Cheap Cocktails. Should soar to the top of the charts. And there were lots of requests for my Reddened Rib Eye with Pimiento Cheese -- the perfect steak for Father's Day.

The magical rub -- made from sweet paprika, smoked paprika, and sumac may require a trip to an upscale food store or spice market, but these are three ingredients I now always have in my pantry. You should, too. They make a ruddy crust for the steak that lights up your taste buds -- with sweet, sour, salty, smokey notes. Topping with homemade pimiento cheese makes this a sundae for a cowboy. It's a "hot chill" kind of dish.

Serve with a bowl of my amazing cauliflower-potato puree (recipe below). What looks like the most luxurious offering of buttery, smooth mashed potatoes is instead a puree of cauliflower bound with a bit of potato and sweet butter. The underlying sweetness comes from garlic that gets boiled with the cauliflower. Drink wine! Or drink beer! Lots of great suggestions on the show from beer maven, Jimmy Carbone, owner of Jimmy's No. Craft Beer Bar and Restaurant and co-founder of The Good Beer Seal awards.

Reddened Rib Eye with Pimiento Cheese (adapted from Radically Simple)

8 ounces very sharp yellow Cheddar
3 ounces pimientos from a jar, with 3 tablespoons brine
6 tablespoons mayonnaise
1 small cloves garlic
1-1/2 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon sweet paprika
4 thick rib eye steaks, about 12 ounces each
1/4 cup ground sumac

Preheat the broiler. Chop the cheese and put in a food processor with the pimientos, brine, mayonnaise, and garlic. Process until smooth; add salt and pepper. Chill. Mix together the sugar, both paprikas, and 1-1/2 teaspoons salt. Rub the steaks thoroughly with the mixture and let sit 10 minutes. Rub the sumac thickly on both sides of the steaks. Place on a rimmed baking sheet; broil as close to the heat as possible for 3 to 4 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or until desired doneness. Top each steak with a scoop of pimiento cheese. Serves 4

"Looks like Mashed Potatoes" (adapted from Eat Fresh Food)

1 large head of cauliflower, about 1-1/2 pounds
1 large baking potato
2 large garlic cloves, peeled
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/4 cup milk
6 tablespoons freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cut the cauliflower into 1-inch pieces. Peel the potato and cut into 1/2-inch pieces. Add the cauliflower, potatoes, and garlic to the water. Continue to boil for 16 to 20 minutes, until the vegetables are soft (but not falling apart.) Drain well in a colander and shake dry. Add the cauliflower, potatoes, and garlic to the bowl of a food processor and process until smooth and creamy. Add the butter, milk, and 4 tablespoons of the cheese. Process until very smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately, sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Or you may make the mixture ahead: Spoon it into a shallow casserole and sprinkle it with 2 tablespoons cheese. Bake at 350 degrees until heated through and run it briefly under the broiler until golden. Serves 6

Happy Father's Day.

U.S. reveals accusations against Secret Service

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. government has revealed details of serious allegations against Secret Service agents and officers since 2004, including claims of involvement with prostitutes, leaking sensitive information, publishing pornography, sexual assault, illegal wiretaps, improper use of weapons and drunken behavior. It wasn't immediately clear how many of the accusations have been confirmed.

The heavily censored list, which runs 229 pages, was quietly released under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act to The Associated Press and other news organizations following the Secret Service prostitution scandal that erupted in April in Colombia. It describes accusations filed against Secret Service employees with the Homeland Security Department's inspector general.

Some of the accusations occurred as recently as last month. In many cases, the government noted that some of the claims were resolved administratively, and others were being formally investigated.

The new disclosures of so many serious accusations lend weight to concerns expressed by Congress that the prostitution scandal exposed a culture of misconduct within the Secret Service. Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan apologized for the incident during a hearing in May but insisted that what happened in Colombia was an isolated case.

Secret Service officials did not immediately respond Friday to questions about the accusations.

Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican who has been investigating the Colombia scandal said while some of the allegations were "unfounded or frivolous," others appear to be legitimate and that "adds to my concern about apparent misconduct by some of the personnel of this vital law enforcement agency."

"The key question is whether these incidents indicate a larger cultural problem," Collins said Friday.

Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., said Friday an investigation by the Secret Service's inspector general is continuing and the public should withhold judgment until that review is complete.

The complaints included an alleged sexual assault reported in August 2011. In the heavily censored entry, an employee was accused of pushing a woman who also worked for the agency onto a bed during a work trip. The employee "got on top of (censored) attempting to have sex," even though the woman "told (censored) 'no' several times." The entry noted that supervisors described the accused as "a conscientious and dependable employee." The incident was closed with an "administrative disposition" in February.

They also included an anonymous complaint in October 2003 that a Secret Service agent "may have been involved with a prostitution ring," noting that two telephone numbers belonging to the agent, whose name was censored and who has since retired, turned up as part of an FBI investigation into a prostitution ring. In addition, in 2005, an employee was reported to the Washington field office for being arrested on a charge of solicitation in a park. Documents do not reveal the outcome of that case.

In 2008, an on-duty uniform division officer was arrested in a Washington prostitution sting. The officer, who was driving a marked Secret Service vehicle at the time, was placed on administrative leave, the records show. Sullivan said during the May hearing that the officer was later fired.

Other allegations include:

?October 2011: An employee was accused of sending harassing messages to a woman who interpreted them to be sexual harassment.

?March 2011: A complaint was filed involving embezzlement or theft of public money. Nearly the entire entry was censored save for a notation that it was adjudicated by a judge.

?October 2010: An employee was implicated in a national security leak. The details were censored, and the records didn't include a disposition of the case.

?May 2012: An employee was accused of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. No details were provided, other than that the case was closed administratively.

?May 2012: An officer was videotaped, twice, wandering nude around an apartment complex.

?January 2011: Police in New York arrested an investigative support assistant on charges sexual abuse. The records do not list an outcome for the case.

?2005: An armed agent was accused of threatening to shut down a strip club because it was charging $40 for lap dances and $25 for table-side dances, which the agent said was against federal law. The incident was reported in May 2012.

Some of the allegations were obviously spurious, such as a complaint in August 2010 that a Secret Service agent had performed experiments and implanted stimulators in a citizen's brain. The list also included dozens of complaints about fraudulent emails that circulate widely on the Internet and appear to come from the Secret Service.

A dozen Secret Service officers, agents and supervisors were implicated in the Colombia scandal and eight have been forced out of the agency. At least two employees are fighting to get their jobs back.

Mobile money plan stumbles at start in Haiti

(AP) ? Getting money in Haiti can be a harrowing experience: Bank branches are few, most of them are in the capital and a simple transaction can take half a day. Cash machines are scarce as well, and often broken or empty. And then there are the thieves who often wait nearby in hopes of finding a mark.

So aid agencies trying to remake Haiti after a catastrophic earthquake are promoting a new way to bypass banks altogether: easy money transfers by cellphone. The U.S. government and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have pumped millions of dollars into the plan, which lets people save and move money in mobile phone accounts and quickly withdraw it at a network of retail stores around the country.

As yet, though, few Haitians are buying the idea, which has become one of many post-quake projects to fall short of expectations and a reminder of how hard it is to change a society that has been repeatedly set back by political upheaval and natural disasters.

"I'm not going to invest my money in something I don't see," said James Alexis, a 33-year-old truck driver, as he stood in line at a bank in downtown Port-au-Prince, a wait he expected would take two hours. "It could be a trick."

Backers admit adoption has been slower than expected, though they remain optimistic it will expand, in part because so many Haitians rely on cellphones, often to find jobs. Some 800,000 people initially registered for the service, even if only about 22,000 people regularly use it.

The service "has gone on in the face of political violence, political instability, cholera, gas shortages, you name it, and we're this far," said Greta Greathouse, director of a U.S. Agency for International Development program to improve financial services in Haiti. "Does it mean we're there yet? No. We want it to be sustainable and there's a lot of work that needs to be done."

A spokesman for the Gates Foundation in Seattle, Chris Williams, said by telephone that the project is a "work in progress" but that it's going well.

"It's not a huge surprise to find some disconnect between the number of registered users and currently active users," Williams said. "It takes some time to build up to scale."

The project began months after the January 2010 earthquake when the Gates Foundation announced that it was creating the Haiti Mobile Money Initiative with a $10 million donation. USAID contributed another $5 million for technical assistance.

The idea was to help the 90 percent of Haitians who don't use banks by replicating a mobile money-transfer system that has gained popularity in countries such as Kenya, Uganda and the Philippines.

Two local cellphone companies, Digicel Group Ltd. and Voila, rushed to compete for the money by setting up their own mobile money transfer systems, and so far have been awarded a total of $6.8 million from the foundation.

The system is essentially an account linked to the telephone. Users can transfer up to $250 at a time to another subscriber, who can then withdraw the money from a network of shops ranging from auto-parts stores to internet cafes. As much as $1,500 can be transferred in a month. So far, international transfers are not allowed.

Digicel-Haiti's former CEO, Maarten Boute, said at a Barcelona conference in February that it wasn't easy to explain the system.

"Our main lesson learned is how difficult it is to educate customers," said Boute, who is now a senior adviser to the Jamaica-based company. "When we launched the service we assumed it would be something like selling a mobile phone, where you stick a mobile phone into someone's hand and almost anyone can start using it quite quickly because it's very easy to understand. With a mobile banking service or a mobile money service it's not quite that easy."

The Christian charity World Vision joined the program, seeing it as a simple, cash-free way to pay small rental subsidies to help people move out of the gloomy settlements that sprang up after the earthquake.

But many people didn't understand how to use the technology and were leery of it, said Keith Chibafa, who oversees the project for World Vision. The nonprofit registered 6,000 subscribers for the service, but only 1,000 actually use it.

Confidence was undermined on one occasion when residents of a camp in the city of Croix-des-Bouquets, outside the capital, went to collect their payments and were told there was no money.

"We did have an agent running out of cash," Chibafa said. "It was a problem, a serious problem."

Cab driver Ernst Figaro said he doesn't trust the new service any more than the banks, which are not known for their customer service.

"The electronic system in Haiti is not standing on its feet yet," Figaro said while taking a break from work on a park bench. "I just don't trust putting my money in this system."

Others, such as Wilner Destina, have become converts. The 40-year-old street painter signed up six months ago because he was eager to avoid the frustrating hour-long lines at commercial banks. "It allows us to do (money) transfers with ease," Destina said outside a Digicel store in downtown Port-au-Prince after sending the equivalent of $50 to a friend in Gonaives, a port city 110 kilometers (68 miles) northwest of Haiti's capital.

David Sharpe, Digicel's director of products and services, hopes to find more people like Destina, attracting them with features such as a lottery played on the cellphone and, later, international wire transfers.

More users will arrive through a new government program that will use the service to make transfers to as many as 100,000 mothers who keep their children in school.

With the recent acquisition of Voila, Sharpe joked in an interview that mobile banking will take off in the coming years. "I'll put 10 bucks down that we beat all of your expectations."

Chris Brown Debuts High-Grade 'Till I Die' Video

In the weed-inspired clip, Breezy parties with Big Sean, Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa, set to perform at Sunday's MTV Movie Awards.

The 9-to-5 grind can be a real drag, even for superstars like Chris Brown. To take the edge off, Breezy dons a suit and tie and throws a good old fashioned smoke party with Wiz Khalifa and Big Sean for his "Till I Die" video, which he released online Wednesday night.

Brown's self-directed clip starts in a run-of-the-mill office with maze-like cubicles, boring brown corkboards and a nasty old water cooler. It's all pretty mundane, that is until a rapping Chris pops out of nowhere, tripping the mail guy and encouraging a Sarah Palin look-alike to photo-copy her bare bottom. "A n---a gonna be faded all the way 'til the a.m.," Brown promises as his shift ends and he takes the elevator from the 420th floor to the building's lobby with fellow stoners Wiz and Sean.

The good times continue to roll when Snoop Dogg, along with a few lucky ladies, comes to pick up his homeys in a yellow, old-school convertible. "More drink, pour it up/ More weed, roll it up," Sean raps while Brown harmonizes "I'm high" in the background as they ride through the streets of L.A.

The happy rappers eventually reach their destination, a foggy frat house with thick, billowing smoke, tons of snacks and fellow marijuana enthusiasts Method Man and Redman, who present Wiz with a golden bong.

"Till I Die" was actually Khalifa's second weed-inspired video of the day. Earlier Wednesday, the Pittsburgh spitter dropped a clip for "The Grinder," a jazzy smoke tune from his Taylor Allderdice mixtape. Fans can catch Khalifa performing during Sunday's MTV Movie Awards at 9 p.m. ET, introduced by none other than Charlie Sheen.

For Brown, "Till I Die" is a far cry all of the other videos he's released from his upcoming Fortune album. "Turn Up the Music," which has amassed almost 40 million views on YouTube, is a heavy dance number, while "Strip" finds Chris in the middle of a sexy house party. The Virginia singer's sultry love-making ode "Sweet Love" comes with a video to match, but "Till I Die" is a fun and welcomed departure from it all. Not that we condone that sort of thing.

What do you think of Chris Brown's "Till I Die" video? Tell us in the comments.

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET.
