LG Revolution Review: Solid 4G Phone

Another day, another 4G handset on Verizon. The LG Revolution ($250 with a two-year contract with Verizon; price as of 5/27/11) joins the HTC Thunderbolt and the Samsung Droid Charge as the third LTE device on Big Red. How does it stack up to the other two? While the Revolution is attractive and solidly built, the overlay LG slapped over Android isn't the slickest. I wished LG would have kept the straight Android, like the T-Mobile G2x.

Sturdy, Attractive Design

I first caught a glimpse of the LG Revolution at Verizon's big 4G kickoff at CES and was eager to get my hands on it. Measuring 5.03-by-2.63-by-0.52 inches and weighing 6.06 ounces, the Revolution is slightly larger and heavier than the Thunderbolt. For my small hands, it isn't the most pleasurable thing to hold up to my ear for a long amount of time. The Revolution is solidly built with black plastic around its borders and a rubberdized matte black battery cover with a silver strip running down the middle. Chrome stripes also line the left and right spines of the phone. The plastic below the display has sort of a "brushed" textured effect. It is a subtle detail that makes the phone feel more high quality.

Four responsive touch buttons like beneath the display: Menu, Home Back and Search. A chrome-covered (argh, not a fan of covered ports) micro-USB port is located on the right spine while a chrome-covered HDMI port (argh, again) and volume rocker can be found on the left spine. The 3.5-mm headphone jack and power/lock button is located at the top.

Like the HTC Thunderbolt and the Samsung Droid Charge, the Revolution has a 4.3-inch TFT display. With an 800-by-480-pixel resolution, the Revolution has the same resolution as the Thunderbolt and the Droid Charge. I did some side-by-side tests of images and video on the Thunderbolt and Revolution (see multimedia) and surveyed fellow PCWorld editors. Even though the phones have the same resolution, the editors unanimously agreed that the Thunderbolt had better colors and more clarity. The Revolution is incredibly difficult to see in bright sunlight, too. The screen gets quite smudgy, which adds to the bad outdoor visibility.

Clunky Android Overlay

The Revolution runs Android 2.2 (Froyo) with a custom-built LG overlay running on top of it. Mostly, the overlay behaves as native Android does. Dots running across your homescreen help you keep track of which homescreen you're on. Like HTC Sense, you can see thumbnail-sized versions of your homescreens by pinching out on any screen. From there, you can jump between them. Four icons consistently run below your homescreens: Phone, Contacts, Messaging and Apps.

For whatever reason, LG made the decision to slap its own software keyboard on the Revolution rather than the stock Android keyboard. Big mistake. The keyboard and autocorrect is incredibly frustrating to use. I made way more errors than I usually do on a stock Android software keyboard. The keys are too slim and the autocorrect seemed to be more incorrect than correct!

The Revolution's App Drawer is, well, kind of a mess. Preinstalled applications are organized by category: Communication, News & Search, Media, Tools, Applications (which is empty) and Downloads. You can't reorganize these apps either, which is annoying. Say you download an app, like Tweetdeck, for your Twittering purposes. By LG's classification, this should fall under Communication, right? Well, too bad, because it is going to get thrown into the "Downloads" section (right, not Applications. I don't get it either). You can't hold down and drag an icon to another section of your App Drawer either (that will actually make the app into a shortcut on one of your homescreens). I tried reorganizing my apps via the Manage Applications menu in Settings, but you can only uninstall or force stop apps there.

I appreciate LG trying to practice some kind of app taxonomy here, but the user should have some sort of control over where the app gets organized. It makes things just more disorganized. It is almost as if Verizon and LG don't expect you to download your own applications.

Speaking of preloaded apps, the Revolution is yet another Verizon phone with Bing Maps and Bing Search preinstalled. Pardon me while I rant for a second. I have nothing against Bing; in fact, I think some of the Windows Phone 7 Bing features look really cool. I just don't think it is fair to consumers who buy an Android phone and expect a full Google experience. What does Google do best? Search. What do you get when you try and search on the Revolution? Bing Search. It is the same story with VZ Navigator. Google Maps does not come preinstalled on the Revolution, strangely. You can of course download these apps, but it is kind of annoying that so many apps come preinstalled, but not these Android staples.

Multimedia

YouTube videos played back smoothly with no buffering, but again, the weaknesses of the Revolution's lower resolution display were apparent. I did a side-by-side comparison of the Thunderbolt, Samsung Nexus S (unfortunately, I had to return the Droid Charge) and the Revolution playing a Shepard Fairey clip on YouTube. I surveyed a few editors around the office who unanimously decided that the Revolution's video had less clarity and sharpness than the other two displays. You really have to look closely, however, to see the differences between the displays, however.

One notable feature about the Revolution is that it comes loaded with the brand new Netflix for Android app. I tested Netflix over both Wi-Fi and 4G. While video ran fairly smoothly over both, the video quality was fuzzy and colors looked washed out. Netflix is not yet supported on the Thunderbolt so I compared it to the Nexus S, which can use the Netflix app.

Camera and Gallery

The Revolution's 5-megapixel took pretty decent pictures inside and out though it wasn't quite on par with other phone cameras we've tested, like the LG G2x or the HTC Droid Incredible 2's snappers. Colors were a bit washed out and details were more on the blurry end. The flash is quite powerful, which is great for very low light environments.

Video shot in 720p looked pretty good though it wasn't spectacular. The camera handled motion well, but again, colors look a bit washed out.

The Gallery is pretty much the same as the native Froyo gallery. Your photos are grouped by whether they're saved on the internal memory or your SD card. If you have a Picasa account, your photos stored there will automatically be loaded into the account.

Performance

While the LG-made T-Mobile G2X is powered by a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, the Revolution only has a single core Snapdragon MSM8655 processor. This is the same second-generation processor you'll find in the HTC Thunderbolt. While we've certainly been impressed with the Tegra 2 phones, the 1GHz Revolution handled games, browsing and multitasking perfectly well.

I tested the LG Revolution's 4G LTE data speeds using the FCC-approved Ookla Speed Test app in the South Park neighborhood of San Francisco. The Revolution got an average download speed of 7.14 megabits per second (mbps) and an average upload speed of 3.46 mbps. The average latency was 86 milliseconds.

Call quality was okay over Verizon's network in San Francisco. Voices sounded quite though crisp and clear with no static, hiss or other distortion. Callers on the other end of the line were quite pleased with my voice on the Revolution; they reported that my voice had an ample amount of volume and a natural tone.

We haven't had a chance to formally test battery life, but the Revolution's 1,500 mAh battery handled about five hours of heavy use on 4G before it needed a charge. It seems like the Revolution suffers from the same battery issues as the Thunderbolt and the Charge. And of course, there's no preloaded widget to switch off 4G; you have to either go into Settings or install a third-party widget. Once we do our formal testing, I'll update the review with the results.

Bottom Line

If you're looking for a phone to watch movies, do some heavy browsing and play games, you'll be satisfied with the LG Revolution. But in terms of how it ranks among Verizon's 4G phones, I'd have to put it in third place. The Droid Charge, while more expensive ($300), has a more superior Super AMOLED Plus display. The Thunderbolt, the same price, has a cleaner user interface and seemingly better display. The Revolution's interface is less polished, but its hardware is the most attractive of the three.

Sean Kingston Was Going "REALLY Fast", Says Jet Ski Passenger

sean-kingston-jetski-detials.jpg

Poor guy. It's always hard when you hear stories like this and then it turns out it could have been avoided.

Over the weekend, Sean Kingston crashed a jet ski into a bridge in Miami while cruising the waters with a female friend. As of now, we've only heard that Sean is stabilized, but his jet ski cohort has come forward to reveal new details about the accident and how Sean could have prevented it.

Cassandra Sanchez is a longtime friend of Sean's and reveals that it was the singer's need for speed that got them into trouble on Saturday night when riding the waters with friends. She explains:

"Both jet skis pulled out of the dock at the same time and we were going so fast we just blasted past them. When we turned a corner and crashed ? they were so far behind us they didn't even see us crash."

She goes on to explain that Sean took them in the direction of the bridge "REALLY fast," but as they were racing, she implored him to turn around, screaming, "We can't fit under there! Are we going to try and go under there? Sean stop!" At the last second he did, but by then it was too late as Cassandra reveals Sean lost control and that's when they crashed.

What happened next seems like nothing short of a nightmare for them both. Cassandra remembers waking up in the water "in pain" and that their friends on the other jet ski came racing to help. Sean was pulled from the water, but he was in-and-out of consciousness, "coughing up blood, foam and pink stuff," and repeating the phrase "I'm hurting," over and over again. Finally, a rescue boat came and took them all to shore.

Cassandra's condition is fine, save for some sore ribs and her jaw, but Sean, she reveals, is still hooked up to machines and has a "tube down his throat" to help him breathe. However, she reports that he is "lucid" and responsive and with any luck, he'll be out of the hospital in a few weeks.

How awful! Really, very sad to think of someone so young in such condition.

We're still sending him all our prayers and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Well folks, it's been on my research topics list since January of this year, but during the past several days, I've finally been able to perform the detailed comparative analysis the topic deserves.

What topic is this, you're probably asking? The topic is Valuation-Informed Indexing (or Valuation-Informed Index Fund Investing - however you want to call it). This topic/investing strategy was first introduced to me by Rob Bennett when he guest posted on the subject over at Free From Broke?and has been the topic of numerous online and offline discussions in the personal finance world.

Reading Rob's post really got me interested in this form of investing, because it is sort of an attempt to put a more actively managed role on my current investing strategy of passive investing, but without all of the emotion that normally causes the performance of active investors to suffer. More specifically, I wanted to find out two things after first hearing about Valuation-Informed Indexing. These are described below:

  • Determine the exact method it uses to find out how unbiased and repeatable it is.
  • Perform a long term (approximately 20 years) performance comparison between Valuation-Informed Indexing and passive investing to determine which makes you more money.?
    • In this analysis, I would also want to compare risk levels (standard deviations) and attempt to optimize the Valuation-Informed Indexing method.??

So, armed with nothing but a Toshiba laptop, a "why-not" attitude, and a smile, I set off in trying to find some answers to the?aforementioned?goals.

Note from Jacob: I really get a lot of enjoyment out of these types of post that require putting together a spreadsheet, inputing some interest rate formulas, and analyzing large amounts of historical data. Maybe it is the scientist in me that enjoys this!

What is Valuation-Informed Indexing (VII) and How is it Different from Passive Investing?

Truthfully, it was fairly difficult to figure out the exact method that defines Valuation-Informed Index Investing and makes it different from passive investing. This is most likely due to the fact that it doesn't yet have a wide following, as opposed to passive investing where there are shelves full of books written on the subject!

However, through study of 1) Rob Bennett's website about Valuation-Informed Indexing?(in particular, his "How To" guide) and 2) Professor Wade Pfau's preliminary research, I was able to piece together enough information to define the VII method and construct a study.

In a general sense, Valuation-Informed Indexing involves changing your asset allocation targets in response to fluctuations in market prices. What does this mean exactly? It means that you should have a higher equity asset allocation when the market is lower and a lower equity asset allocation when the market is high.

Now, this all sounds well and good. But, the real question is "How do we actually go about doing this in a way that doesn't introduce investor sentiment and ineffective market timing tactics?" VII has an answer to this too!

A summary of the Valuation-Informed Indexing methodology is summarized below:

  • First, decide on your base asset allocation. For example, in my study, I used 60% equity / 40% fixed income securities.
  • Second, use PE10 data (Current price of S&P500 divided by average inflation-adjusted earnings over the past 10 years) published by Professor Robert Shiller at Yale to change your asset allocation targets based on market fluctuations.
    • When the PE10 goes above 20, switch to 30% equity / 70% fixed income.
    • When the PE10 goes below 12, switch to 90% equity / 10% fixed income.
    • When PE10 is between 12 and 20, use your base asset allocation (60% equity / 40% fixed income, for example).

Application of this strategy is supposed to deliver superior returns at much less risk (standard deviation of returns) than a fixed asset allocation with regular rebalancing (in other words, passive investing).

Existing Findings

The only other numerical studies comparing passive investing to Valuation-Informed Indexing were conducted by Professor Wade Pfau. His preliminary findings can be found here, and the definitive, complete report, can be found at this link.

Wade's findings reveal that VII provides more wealth for 102 of the 110 rolling 30-year periods from 1870 to 1980. However, in recent years, it appears that the?out performance?of VII over passive investing is becoming less and less.

As someone in my mid-20's, the time period I was most curious about was the most recent twenty year period. Additionally, I wanted to test this period because in order for me to be convinced to give up passive investing in favor of Valuation-Informed Investing, I would need to see demonstration of its superiority in a time frame that is more?relevant?to me.

Lastly, over any 20 year period, it would reason to believe that random, short term fluctuations in the market should be hidden by the correct, overall, long term behavior.

Study Methodology

So, now that I?ve explained a little bit about what Valuation-Informed Indexing is in general and what existing research has been done on the subject, we can now get in to the specific investigation that I conducted.
The details of how I set up my analysis are summarized below:???????Investment Total ? For simplicity, we will assume that our investment only consists of a one-time initial purchase of $10,000. Transaction fees, fund expense ratios, and taxes will not be considered in the scope of this analysis.

???????? Time Period ? January, 1990 to May, 2011.

???????? Portfolios ? There will be two competing types of portfolios ? 1) a Valuation-Informed Indexing portfolio, and 2) a passive investing portfolio. Various parameters within each of the models will be changed in order to analyze performance. o?? Both of these resources have a handy ?export in Excel format? feature to facilitate quick analysis in spreadsheet format.

???????? Rebalancing ? Rebalancing for the passive investing and VII portfolios will be done monthly (the same as what I do currently). This is different than Pfau?s analysis, which assumed annual rebalancing.

???????? Asset allocation changes ? The passive investing portfolio will remain at the same asset allocation targets for the duration of the study. However, the asset allocation targets for the Valuation-Informed Indexing portfolio will be adjusted based on the PE10 trigger levels discussed previously. The complete results/details of my comparison between VII and passive investing can be found at the following Google Docs Spreadsheet ? Valuation-Informed Investing vs. Passive Investing. Rows 1696 and 1697 contain the total return and standard deviation (risk level) for each portfolio.

The table below shows a summary of the portfolio returns and standard deviations of the analysis. Three passive investing portfolios were compared to three different Valuation-Informed Indexing portfolios/strategies. It?s interesting to note that from 1990-2011, the PE10 never fell to the lower trigger point level of 12.

As can be seen in the table, passive investing with monthly rebalancing resulted in total returns over the ~20 year time period of 239%, 267%, and 220%, for 60/40, 75/25, and 50/50, asset allocation splits, respectively.

For comparison, three different Valuation-Informed Indexing strategies/portfolios were employed, as described below:Valuation-Informed Indexing Portfolio 1
Using this strategy, a total return over the time period analyzed was 185% (much less than the 60/40 asset allocation passive investing portfolio).
Valuation-Informed Indexing Portfolio 2Because the total return obtained from Portfolio 1 failed to outperform the passive investing portfolios, I decided to attempt to refine the strategy (because I really do feel that there is potential for this form of investing! We just have to find it!).Next, I proceeded to take the average PE10 from 1990-May 2011, and saw that the average PE10 was a whopping 25.68. Since this PE10 seems to be higher than we?ve seen historically, I figured that maybe by increasing the upper trigger to 25, a higher return would be seen.Making this change, the strategy for Portfolio 2 becomes as follows:
  • When the PE10 goes above 25, switch to 30% equity / 70% fixed income.
  • When the PE10 goes below 12, switch to 90% equity / 10% fixed income.
  • When PE10 is between 12 and 20, use your base asset allocation (60% equity / 40% fixed income, for example).

Using this strategy resulted in a total return over the time period of 195% - higher than Portfolio 1, but still much lower than the passive portfolios.

Valuation-Informed Indexing Portfolio 3 ?In a final effort to increase my returns using VII, I next tried to increase my equity exposure during ?high PE10? times to 50% equity/50% fixed income (instead of 30/70 in Portfolio 1 and 2).Making this adaptation, the strategy for Portfolio 3 becomes as follows:
  • When the PE10 goes above 20, switch to 50% equity / 50% fixed income.
  • When the PE10 goes below 12, switch to 90% equity / 10% fixed income.
  • When PE10 is between 12 and 20, use your base asset allocation (60% equity / 40% fixed income, for example).

Using this strategy resulted in a total return over the time period of 221% - higher than Portfolio 1 and 2, but still much lower than the passive portfolios, with the exception of the 50/50 asset allocation one.

Conclusion ? Passive investing outperforms Valuation-Informed Indexing in the past 20 years, but VII displays much less risk. This is consistent with the normal risk/return correlation. ??So, what can we conclude from all of these results and confusing numbers? In my opinion, we can take away several key things. 1)???? While Valuation-Informed Index Investing may have outperformed passive investing in most previous historical periods, evidence of it not performing as well in recent years is enough to keep me as a passive investor, at least until VII is refined. a.????? It?s interesting to note that by using the VII methodology, an investor would have been 30% equity / 70% fixed income from January 1995 until September 2008. The investor would have taken on less risk (in the subsequent market crash of 2008-2009) by owning fewer equity shares during this ?high price? time. However, he or she also almost totally missed out on the 163% total return during the ~13 year time period. 2)???? Valuation-Informed Index Investing has great potential because it greatly reduces the risk to investor returns.a.????? Even though VII failed to outperform passive investing in my analysis, it also provided much less risk, as evidenced by the sharp decrease in standard deviation of the portfolio value over time.b.???? For example, VII Portfolio 1 provides a slightly lower return of 185% over the time period analyzed (compared to the passive investing portfolios). However, the portfolio also has 34%, 55%, and 21% less risk (standard deviation of portfolio value) compared to the 60/40, 75/25, and 50/50 passive portfolios, respectively. This ability of VII to deliver sufficient (but slightly lower) returns at less risk is what I think is the real power of Valuation-Informed Indexing. I feel that with some refinements, VII can become an effective investing strategy. However, I?m not quite ready to switch over just yet? Thanks for reading!
How about you all? Have you ever tried or heard of Valuation-Informed Index Investing? What are your thoughts about its efficacy? What improvements do you think need to be made??

Business Analytics ? Strategic Workforce Planning ? Simulate to ...

By Henner Schliebs, Director Solutions Marketing, SAP Business Analytics for LoB

There?s a famous and wise quote whose relevance will never fade ? ?If you fail to plan, you plan to fail? ? by Norman Vincent Peale, author and influential clergyman in the US during the 20th century. And this is certainly true with business analytics.

A recent blog post by Padmini Ranganathan, a thought leader in the enterprise performance management (EPM) space, focused on this very topic. In it, she discussed how an integrated approach to all enterprise planning exercises is key to becoming a best run company. To continue that discussion, I?ll focus on the HR executive, specifically strategic workforce planning.

Market Trends Necessitate Strategic Workforce Planning

Over the past 12 ? 18 months, Aberdeen, IDC, and other analysts, as well as numerous consultancies and the HCI have published papers and reports about a new management process: strategic workforce planning. Talent management (identifying and proactively developing employees with the potential to advance in the organization) has been a hot topic on the Web even longer. And global market trends underscore the need for both management processes:

  • Cost pressures
  • Aging workforce
  • Decreasing talent loyalty
  • Mergers and acquisitions
  • Technology advancement

These market trends point enterprises in one direction: adopting a new approach to business analytics!

Strategic Workforce Planning as a Business Analytics Process?

Is strategic workforce planning really a business analytical process? Yes.

Mollie Lombardi and Justin Bourke define it as ?the systematic approach of aligning business strategy, human capital strategy, and budgets in order to ensure that talent with the right skills and competencies are in place to support anticipated and unanticipated future business scenarios?? (Strategic Workforce Planning ? Winning Scenarios for Uncertain Times, Aberdeen).

Aberdeen also recommends that companies ?plan for an uncertain future through scenario [planning] and? analytics?? and ??view workforce planning as a tool to manage organizational change.?

And Deloitte?s take on applying analytics to workforce issues is to take ?a top-down approach that bridges the gap between data and business problems by providing a repeatable framework for achieving resolutions.? Translated that means, analyze your current situation (data) and simulate trends that affect the achievement of strategic goals ? all under the assumption that market pressures dictate the analytics and metrics.

Bottom line: HR executives need business decision support. And a critical success factor is that it must be a clearly defined and integrated business process.

Many companies have yet to set up a formal process and long for business advice and supporting technology. The first step is to assess what your company is doing to ensure it has:

  • The right resources
  • With the right skills
  • In the right job
  • At the right moment
  • In the right quantity
  • In the right place
  • At the right price

So how do you view strategic workplace planning? Do you see it as business analytics? Why or why?

And a closing thought: as a pastor, Peale talked a lot about positive thinking and hope. But the first thing you learn when taking responsibility for a process, a project, a program, or a company is that hope is not a strategy.
