Google Voice for Android updated with tablet support

Google Voice

The Google Voice app just received another update this evening, bumping it to version 4.2.34 and bringing a very short (but welcome) change log -- tablet support.  We've seen just how easy it is to sideload the app onto your tablet, and plenty of folks noticed the way the action bar looks more tablet-like in the update a few days ago, but now it's more official with it sitting right in the Market, waiting for you to download it.

So get to it -- link is after the break.

Thanks, Daves!

(AP) ? Phil Mickelson caused a minor commotion with his pants and his putter.

The Deutsche Bank Champion began Friday with two players on opposite ends of the world ranking ? Luke Donald at No. 1, Troy Matteson at No. 207 ? having their lowest opening round of the year on the PGA Tour that was important to both of them for different reasons.

Matteson, facing elimination from the FedEx Cup playoffs, overcame a bogey on the first hole for a 6-under 65 and the outright lead after the first round. Donald, struggling of late to get off to a good start, had a 66 and was among those one shot behind.

Through it all, Mickelson brought attention to himself for two items that looked out of place.

The day after he took batting practice at Fenway Park and wore a Red Sox jersey while throwing out the first pitch before the Yankees' 4-2 win, Mickelson wore pinstripes at the TPC Boston.

"Lost a wager with a friend and had to wear these today," Mickelson said. "What can you say? I've got to suck it up and bear it."

Stranger still was the sight of Mickelson sticking the grip of a long putter into his gut.

Mickelson became the latest to try a belly putter, and while he still missed his share of putts in a round of 70, he sounded as though he was willing to stick with it ? at least for the rest of the week.

"I thought it went well," said Mickelson, who opened with back-to-back birdie putts of just inside 10 feet. "I feel that I'm probably putting better with that putter than I would be the short putter, so I'll end up using it for the rest of the tournament I would anticipate. But I don't know if it's a short term or long term thing. But it feels good."

Matteson understands the short term.

He is No. 97 in the FedEx Cup standings, knowing that only the top 70 advance to the third event outside Chicago, and that he'd better play well this week or he'll be heading home for the rest of the playoffs.

His expectations were not terribly high, and they kept sinking when he had a poor session on the practice range, then took bogey on the first hole. It all turned around so suddenly.

"If I don't play well, then I'm not going to play next week," he said. "I look at it like the end of the school year. The end of the school year is almost here, so let's just see what happens. Your expectations probably lower a little bit. Then all of a sudden, you make a few birdies and it's like, 'Well, that's not too bad.' Then you make a few more.

"By the end of the day, you're thinking, 'Gosh, how in the world did that day turn out the way it did?'"

The 65 was his best opening round of the year, and he can only hope it leads to better things. He had a playoff loss in Puerto Rico and only one other top 10 this year.

Matteson was one shot clear of Donald, Masters champion Charl Schwartzel, former PGA champion Y.E. Yang and Jerry Kelly. The group at 67 included Nick Watney, a two-time winner this year, while Dustin Johnson followed his playoff win at The Barclays with a 68 that left him disappointed ? he made bogey on both par 5s on his back nine.

Despite having such a stellar year that took him to No. 1 in the world, Donald has been struggling of late to get off to a good start. It looked as though that might be the case again until he made three straight pars saves on the back nine, starting at No. 12, which allowed him to keep his momentum until the end.

"I think it was the putting," Donald said. "I feel like tee-to-green, I've been a lot more solid this year, and even the last few months. The putter has been a little bit cold. It hasn't been terrible, but just not as good as I would expect. And today was a lot better."

The biggest gallery of the morning belonged to PGA champion Keegan Bradley, who grew up in the area and was followed along by his father, his famous aunt ? LPGA great Pat Bradley ? and more friends and family than he could count. The ticket request was so great that he asked for 30 to 50 a day, and turned everything over to his mother.

Bradley opened with a 68, a good performance in front of a hometown crowd.

"It was a little more intense just because I want to play well in front of these guys, in front of my family," Bradley said. "But I had a good round. I had such a good group today. It was very relaxing."

Schwartzel has a chance to become the third player in the five-year history of the FedEx Cup to win the $10 million by skipping the first playoff event. Tiger Woods did it in 2007, as did Jim Furyk a year ago, though not on purpose. He overslept and missed his pro-am time, making him ineligible to play The Barclays.

Schwartzel has a big finish to his year, so he wanted some time off. He didn't think it was the worst idea, especially when an earthquake and hurricane hit New Jersey in the same week.

"I was sitting in South Africa in the sunshine and watching the guys struggle through the hurricane and all the things happening out here," he said. "In that sense, it was maybe a good choice. But by missing an event, you put yourself back a little bit on the back foot."

Schwartzel started at No. 21 and slipped to No. 28 by not playing. He doesn't know all the details of the FedEx Cup, only that a win in any of the opening three events will give him as good a shot as anyone at the big prize.

There wasn't much movement around the bubble. William McGirt, who barely got into the playoffs and barely made it through to Boston, opened with a 69 and kept alive his hopes of still playing.

Two players whose season ended Friday were Scott Verplank, who has been battling wrist issues all year; and Trevor Immelman, who learned after the round that his wife's grandfather had died. Both withdrew.

Tropical warnings for US Gulf coast over storm

Areas along the Gulf coast could get up to 20 inches of rain from a system that could blow into tropical storm strength, leading Louisiana's governor to declare a state of emergency Thursday because of the threat of serious flash flooding.

"High wind, a lot of rain and it's going slow," New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said in describing the system. "That's not a good prescription for New Orleans."

The system became a tropical depression Thursday evening, and forecasters issued tropical storm warnings from Mississippi to Texas.

"We've got a huge area of moisture, we've got a developing wind field ... we're probably going to see some tremendous rain amounts and the corresponding flooding that goes with that," NHC Director Bill Read told reporters in Miami.

Tidal flooding is possible along the coast from the Florida Panhandle to Texas, Read said.

Some computer models showed the developing system, which would be called Lee if it became a tropical storm, could pass over the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Lee will be the 12th named storm of the busy 2011 Atlantic hurricane season.

Flash flood watches were issued for parts of southern Louisiana and Mississippi. Up to 20 inches of rain could fall in some area and tides could be one to two feet above normal, forecasters said.

Cities facing the greatest threat from the system include New Orleans and Mobile, Ala., The Weather Channel forecast online.

New Orleans' levees could be tested by the slow-moving system, forecast service Accuweather.com said Thursday.

"It's not just the rainfall, but perhaps days of pressure on levees, as storm surge water could be driven into Lake Pontchartrain," Accuweather.com Meteorologist Mark Mancuso said in a statement.

Officials in the New Orleans ordered that levees be pumped down to lower levels in anticipation of heavy rain, the Times-Picayune reported.

The Army Corps of Engineers said it did not expect the system to trigger much of a storm surge but was preparing for that just in case.

Landrieu echoed that, but added that the system is "very unpredictable and uncertain."

Texas, which is in the grip of a severe drought, isn't likely to get much rain from the system,?? Accuweather.com said.

The system, now over the central part of the gulf, already has prompted some major international oil companies to evacuate workers from offshore oil platforms.

The Miami-based hurricane center said the low pressure area was producing a large area of clouds, thunderstorms and gusty winds as it headed slowly to the northwest.

"This system has a high chance ... 80 percent ... of becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours ... Interests along the entire northern Gulf of Mexico coast should monitor the progress of this disturbance," the NHC said Thursday afternoon.

"Considering potential for damage, impact to the petroleum industry and commerce in the Gulf Coast region," Accuweather.com stated, the system "could be the next billion-dollar disaster in a mountainous year of costly storms for the U.S."

Meanwhile, still far east out over the Atlantic, Hurricane Katia formed late Wednesday and was churning west but posing no immediate threat to land.

Story: Katia weakens back to tropical storm ? for now

The Atlantic hurricane season typically brings 11 or 12 named storms. Katia is already the 11th and with half of the season still ahead, it is shaping up to be the unusually busy year that was predicted.

Wakeup call for college students: New research finds you need to catch more Z's

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2011) ? University of Cincinnati research finds that college students could be undermining their own education, simply because they're not practicing proper sleep habits. The study, led by Adam Knowlden, a UC doctoral student in UC's Health Promotion and Education Program, also holds recommendations for students to form better sleep habits that will ultimately enhance their learning.

The study evaluated the sleep habits of nearly 200 undergraduate college students between the ages of 18 and 24 who were not living with a parent or legal guardian. The study included 130 females and 67 males who were mostly first-and-second-year college students. The majority of them also worked either full or part-time jobs as they were going to college.

The study surveyed student sleeping habits over a 24-hour period against national recommendations for adults to get at least seven-to-eight hours of sleep. Only 24 percent of the students who were surveyed reported getting adequate sleep -- 54.8 percent reported getting under seven hours of sleep, while 20.8 percent reported sleeping more than eight hours.

Short-term effects of inadequate sleep affect concentration and memory, which is what students need to learn and to pay attention in lectures.

"Sleep helps us save energy. It repairs cells in the body. And it's key for memory consolidation," Knowlden explains. "During sleep, the brain acts like a hard-drive on a computer. It goes in and cleans up memories and makes connections stronger, and it gets rid of things it doesn't need."

"So if a student is sleep-deprived, it affects the whole process," Knowlden says. "Students aren't able to learn, they're not able to remember, it's harder to concentrate and it affects mood. They're working their way through college and they're not maximizing their learning potential," he says.

Knowlden says the survey found that time management, financial concerns and stress management were all factors in why students were reporting they were sacrificing sleep.

He adds that if they're not practicing proper sleep habits, they can't catch up on the weekend. "It's like a bank account. If you try to take what's not there, it's not going to work. You can't make up for it once you miss it -- you either get it or you don't."

Knowlden explains that the health term for setting up proper sleep habits involves proper sleep hygiene, or proper planning for a good night's sleep. He adds that the benefits stretch beyond not feeling sleepy or grumpy the next day.

"It's difficult to change habits, especially sleep habits, but if students really want to make a difference in maximizing their education and their learning experience, getting enough sleep is critical," says Knowlden.

"I've taught a stress management class here at UC and I've told students before that if they get nothing else out of this class, they need to remember to get seven or eight hours of sleep each night."

Proper sleep hygiene means setting up a proper bedtime ritual to enhance sleep, Knowlden says. Here's what he recommends they avoid:

  • Restrict caffeine, alcohol and nicotine within one hour of bedtime.
  • Avoid intense exercise within one hour of bedtime.
  • Avoid going to bed and getting up at different times.
  • Avoid long naps -- a 15-minute "power nap" is enough.
  • Avoid Internet social networking and games (considered stressors that keep the mind alert) before bedtime.
  • Avoid studying, reading, eating or watching TV in bed as part of the bedtime routine.
  • Eliminate too much light and noise in the bedroom.

Here's what they should do:

  • Keep bedtime and waking time consistent.
  • Set up a comfortable sleeping environment -- not too bright, too cold, too hot or too noisy. Sleep on a comfortable mattress and pillows.
  • Use the bed for sleep, not for studying for exams.
  • Turn to relaxing sleep routines such as relaxation exercises or the student's personal religious ritual.
  • Writing out worries in a personal journal can also ease stress.

Knowlden's research was awarded first place in 2010 and 2011, at the Ohio Public Health Association Conference academic student poster presentation. The study was also awarded first place in the social and behavioral sciences category of the University of Cincinnati Graduate Poster Forum in 2010.

Manoj Sharma, UC professor of health promotion and education, and Amy Bernard, a UC associate professor of health promotion and education, were contributing authors on the study.

The research was supported by a faculty mentoring grant from the Office of the Dean, UC College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH).
