2012 Olympics to be broadcast in resolution that blows HD out of the water (Yahoo! News)

Get a sneak peak at the evolution of high definition

While most of us are quite satisfied with current high-definition video standards, TV makers are already dreaming up ways to make your home entertainment even more lifelike. To give a sneak peak of what the future may hold, the BBC is organizing public screenings of the 2012 London Olympics that will be broadcast in a new video format called Super Hi-Vision (SHV) ? a resolution that offers 16x more detail than 1080p HD displays.

1080p visuals carry a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels, which ? compared to old 480-pixel standard definition displays ? is a massive step up. Super Hi-Vision blows current HD away with an absurd 7,680 by 4,320 resolution, which is the equivalent to 33 megapixels. SHV isn't expected to make it into the consumer market for several years, but select showings in Washington D.C. will offer those eager to upgrade a sneak peak at the new technology.

Details on exactly when and where in D.C. you'll be able to watch the games on an SHV display are still being hashed out, but those specifics are sure to surface as we approach the event. For those who don't feel like making the trip, the BBC is still allowing Olympics fans to watch the games in a whole new way via an extensive 3D broadcasting lineup.
