Tax Software Review: H&R Block at Home and 15% Off | Careful Cents

H&R Block has been in business since 1955 and the world?s largest tax preparation companies.

In addition to offering tax services at each of their offices, they also offer taxpayers a sort of DIY software to be used at home.

It?s called H&R Block At Home and comes with many of the same features you would get at their offices.

Being an H&R Block fan for several years now, I decided to try their computer software.

Here?s my honest?assessment?of their software after using it to file my own taxes.

Filing options

When you?re looking for the right method to file your taxes, you need to determine the best program. Are your taxes simple, complicated or somewhere in the middle?

Downloading the software

Once I got my software, it only took 4 minutes to download to my laptop. I like the fact I don?t have to be connected to the internet (unless I?m sending it to the IRS).

I chose the premium version since it?s perfect for Self-Employed (schedule C) taxpayers, investors and people with rental income. For me, it gives the most bang for my buck.

Doing the numbers

Inputting my information was easy and the steps were very self-explanatory.

As I went through each of the screens, my personal tax guide and advice option popped up.

As you can see, in the right bottom hand corner there?s a bottom labeled ?Personal Tax Guide?.

It is available throughout the whole return to give advice or tips if I need them. It helps be sure all the more complicated aspects of the return are done correctly.

Next, it had something I thought was very cool (being a tax nerd and all). The software had a video Q&A section, showing lots of information for 2011.

So if you prefer to watch video and tips when filing your taxes, you will love this feature.

Finishing up

As I was finishing up the return, the software ran through several security checks and accuracy points.

One of them being the audit risk calculation. I?ve never seen this before, but I think it?s an awesome feature.

The Verdict

This software served every purpose I needed it to. It went above and beyond my expectations and I can save/print from my computer anytime I want.

I can also check the status of my return and my refund from within the software. This keeps me from inputting my details into the IRS website (which is where I normally check my status).

I highly recommend this software, especially for filing your small business, self employed or investment tax information.

It was easy, secure and completely covered with accuracy and audit guarantees.
