Report: UK suicide bomber widow sought in Kenya

London's Times newspaper reported on a suspected terrorist plot in Kenya Wednesday.

By msnbc.com staff

LONDON -- A woman believed to be the widow of one of the four suicide bombers that killed 52 London commuters in July, 2005, is being sought by Kenyan authorities in relation to a terrorist plot in that country, The Times newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Kenyan police were searching for a woman who evaded them when they tried to capture members of a group thought to be planning an attack on the city of Mombasa in December, 2011, the newspaper reported. (The Times operates behind a paywall.)

One of the identities the suspect was believed to be traveling under was Samantha Lewthwaite, the widow of Jermaine Lindsay, who blew up a subway train at King's Cross station on July 7, 2005, Kenyan police told The Times.

?

A Briton from east London has been charged in Kenya with possession of illegal explosive material and plotting to detonate a bomb. Jermaine Grant, 29, was arrested with three Kenyan men. Police are investigating possible ties with the Islamist group al-Shabab in Somalia. Ch4 News' Jonathan Rugman reports.

Lindsey's backpack-borne bomb claimed 26 lives on 7/7, as the attack is known in the U.K.

A Kenyan police spokesman Eric Kiraithe told The Times: "We know quite a bit about her now. She has had three identities in the past and that [Samantha Lewthwaite] is one possible identity."

Kenyan police have been working with British police over the operation and have sent a large team to Nairobi to help with the investigation, the newspaper reported.

New al-Qaida video suggests Somalia alliance

Lewthwaite, 28, a convert to Islam who called her husband's actions on July 7, 2005, "abhorrent," is suspected of being part of a cell directed by terrorist group al-Shabab, according to The Times.

Lewthwaite's family say they have not had any contact with her in years, the newspaper reported.

Police are also searching for another British suspect, Habib Ghani of London, according to the Times.

6 cities where home prices are falling sharply

By Martin Wolk

Although there have been some recent encouraging signs that the housing industry is getting back on its feet, home prices are still falling in virtually all the nation's big metro areas, according to data released Tuesday.

The latest S&P Case-Shiller home price index shows home prices fell in 19?of the nation's 20 biggest cities in December, compared with a year earlier. Only Detroit -- one of the cities hardest hit by the economic downturn --?bucked the trend, with prices up a scant 0.5 percent from December 2010.

And that was little reason for cheering. Home prices fell 3.8 percent in Detroit from November to December -- the biggest one-month drop of any city in the index. Detroit home prices also have suffered the biggest drop of any city since January 2000, according to the index.

"In terms of prices, the housing market ended 2011 on a very disappointing note," said David?Blitzer, chairman of the Standard and Poor's?index committee.?"While we thought we saw some signs of stabilization in the middle of 2011, it appears that neither the economy nor consumer confidence was strong enough to move the market in a positive direction as the year ended."

Here are the cities where prices have fallen the farthest over the past year, based on the index:

  • Atlanta, -12.8%
  • Las Vegas, -8.8%
  • Chicago, -6.5%
  • Seattle, -5.6%
  • San Francisco, -5.4%
  • San Diego, -5.4%

The index also measures each metro area compared with price levels in January 2000. On that basis, Detroit, Atlanta, Las Vegas and Cleveland have been hardest hit. All have prices that are typically below where they were 12 years ago.

Washington, D.C., New York and and Los Angeles are the metro areas where home prices have had the best performance over the past 12 years. In all three cases prices are up at least 60 percent from the index year.

"After a prior three years of accelerated decline, the past two years has been a story of a housing market that is bottoming out but has not yet stabilized," Blitzer said in the release.

The S&P Case Shiller report is a widely respected measure of metropolitan home prices based on "matched price pairs" of individual homes in each metro area.

How are home prices in your neck of the woods? Weigh in on our Facebook page.

Former Calif. High School Baseball Star Still Part of a Team

Feb. 26--FROM TEMPE, Ariz. -- The coach once helped carry his son from tee ball to the top of the high school baseball world, never missing a game, cheering every moment, from midnight batting practice to driveway bullpen sessions to championship glory.

Today, the coach gently places his son over his shoulder and carries him from his wheelchair to the front seat of his dusty truck.

"We were never much for hugging," Dale Hahn says. "But now I get to hug my son all the time."

The coach once pushed the son to become California's Mr. Baseball, working on his swing, inspiring his hustle and watching him become a powerful outfielder with speed, smarts, a full scholarship to Arizona State and a major league future.

Now, the coach pushes the son's wheelchair across busy streets and over large bumps to a college economics class.

"There were times I would wonder, what's better, being dead or being like this?" Cory Hahn says. "But then I look up and see my dad and think, if he can do it, I can do it."

It has been a year since this former Santa Ana Mater Dei High baseball star broke his neck diving into second base in his third collegiate game, shattering the life of the Southland's brightest baseball star into tiny dark pieces.

Yet while everything has changed, nothing has changed.

Cory Hahn is a C5 quadriplegic, paralyzed from the chest down. He has limited use of his hands and arms. The kid who once led his team to a CIF championship by pitching five perfect innings, making an over-the-shoulder catch and hitting a long home run now battles to eat hamburgers, wash his hair and wheel to class.

"My goals don't take days anymore, they take weeks, they take months," he says.

But, as always, Cory is able to stretch toward those goals from the broad shoulders of the balding guy he calls Pops. The man who always urged him to give full effort by "Spilling your bucket" has met this challenge by overturning his life.

After spending years as his son's baseball coach, Dale Hahn has quit his job as a sales rep to become his son's life coach.

When Cory moved back to the Arizona State campus in January to continue his studies, Dale went with him. While Cory moved into a rental home with three teammates, Dale moved into an extended-stay hotel down the street.

Cory awakens every morning to the sound of his father's key in his bedroom door. Dale shows up at 7 a.m., flicks on the lights, turns on the television, maybe turns on the space heater, and then pulls his son out of bed to begin their day.

Together they dress and shower and prepare Cory, with each day painstakingly bringing a tad more separation for the fiercely independent son. Just the other day, they celebrated that Cory was using his once-lifeless hands to wash his own hair.

"We live for the little victories," Cory says. "We're a team."

Together they drive to campus in Dale's truck, where they go from a street parking spot to Cory's first class, with Cory wheeling himself most of the way. It is a process that makes his shoulders ache and has turned his hands into giant calluses, but he refuses to use a power chair or wheelchair gloves, staring down his new life as he once stared down 90-mph cutting fastballs.

"I see all these college kids running and skating across campus, and then I see Cory just chugging along in his chair, the world moving past him," Dale says. "I feel really bad for him ... and I am so, so proud of him."

After classes, together they go to lunch, with Cory able to feed himself only after countless days of practicing with his dad. Their efforts were fueled from the embarrassment Cory said he felt when, eating lunch for the first time with friends, he realized they would have to feed him.

"That devastated me," Cory recalls. "I told my dad, we've got to figure this out, and it was really messy, but we did it."

After lunch, they go to a gym for therapy, and then his father might drop him off at a Sun Devils baseball practice or game before taking him home for the night. Cory will hang out with friends until about 11 p.m., at which point his father returns to his room to lay him into bed and put the television on a timer and slip out with a simple, "Good night, buddy."

Military Prepares to Explain Koran Burnings As Afghan Riots ...

The U.S. once hoped its investigation into its troops? burning the Koran would calm outrage in Afghanistan. But that was before four Americans were killed in the resultant violence, including two troops killed inside the very Interior Ministry that Washington bankrolls. Now, as the military prepares to release the results of its inquiry this week, the U.S. ambassador to Kabul, Ryan Crocker, says the best the Washington can hope for is for the popular anger to peter out.

Protests ? some better called riots ? have spread into their sixth day. Most shockingly, an Interior Ministry employee killed two U.S. servicemembers working in the ministry?s Kabul headquarters, reportedly by shooting them in the head on Saturday with a silencer-equipped pistol. Pentagon press secretary George Little called the killings ?murder.?

The killings prompted Gen. John Allen, commander of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, to pull all U.S. military advisers out of Afghan government ministries in Kabul as a protective measure. Allen?s subordinate commanders frequently tell reporters that U.S. and Afghan security forces work together intimately; the prompt removal of advisers indicates a distrust below the surface. Crocker told CNN on Sunday that he had issued a complementary order for U.S. diplomats.

Associated Press Pentagon reporter Robert Burns tweeted on Sunday that the Pentagon has cancelled a visit from Afghan ministers scheduled for this week. President Hamid Karzai waited until the sixth day of riots to issue a call to avoid violence. Even so, on Sunday, a grenade thrown by protesters in northern Afghanistan wounded at least six U.S. troops.

The origins

It is interesting with look back at the origins of normal everyday technological stuff that we see around. Originally, the GPS tracker was meant with be a tool tailored for military utilize and not for the normal citizen. Due with the efficiency and functionality of the GPS technologies, it has prepared it with the public scene. Moving objects or individuals could be especially difficult with track down with exact locations if not for the GPS. So, we could clearly see that individuals have the pressing need for a monitoring device that could track down these moving targets. We are indeed blessed because the GPS which was supposedly a military exclusive tool is today accessible for all of us with enjoy.

A Building Muscle Primer for Young Men | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Highschool: most of us have many pleasant memories about it. Lots of our most memorable experiences come from this untroubled moment in our lives. And as each student makes preparations for this time of their lives, they also discover the enjoyment of meeting the opposite sex. Teen boys for one will do almost anything to form a solid impression and one of them is having a well chiseled body. This is when most teenage boys would think about working out and lifting weights.

Remember your own teenage years? Do you continuously compare muscle gain with some of your mates? It was that then and it is still that way now. In fact , it is commoner today as more teenage boys are becoming more acutely aware of their bodies. There is simply no rejecting it; gaining muscle is the in thing.

As a parent, it is wise to support this mind-set, not merely will your teen boy be able have a more healthy body, they can also develop confidence. The problem is, some boys would go take the simpler route. They might take steroids or whatever to help aid the swiftest way in gaining muscle; this can not help them at all, particularly in the determination and incentive department. As a parent it is their duty to show them the proper way to grow muscles.

The best way to gain muscles would always be the proven means, the proper diet and a severe and comprehensive weight lifting workout program. A proper diet will be determined if your child is large or underweight. In the 1st scenario, your kid should lose weight first and lose unwanted body fat. Muscle building will follow in kind after at least a significant weight loss is experienced.

This diet would mean getting shot of fats and calories; sufficient should stay for fueling muscle tissue growth. In the latter, it is the opposite, a skinny kid should eat more but should have the proper intake so that blubber is not made; rigorous strength training ought to be done simultaneously to build bulk, generally of muscles.

It is not a smart idea to immediately push a teenage boy into a full intense workout as their body is still developing. They should be gradually introduced in the program to permit their body to adjust. Make sure also that they have sufficient rest as teenage boys are a bundle of energy. Redirecting this energy in a cleverly planned exercise routine will allow them to maximize the use of their energy.

Most importantly though it?s the disposition that should be set first before embarking on a gaining muscle journey. Teen boys are easily distracted and they can simply forget that they are working on a goal. They have to be keen to finish what they will be beginning. With full commitment, they are going to be able to be successful in gaining muscle in almost no time at all.

These are some of the things one must consider when beginning a program of gaining muscle. There are a lot more, but most vitally, it is all about discipline. Having a healthy and good looking body works miracles to a person , particularly to a teen boy. There isn?t anything quite like the present to start on this fruitful journey. So there you go.

Proview Thwarted In Chinese iPad Trademark Suit, Brings Case To US Shores

chinapple2The dispute between Apple and Proview over the "iPad" trademark has just gotten a lot more domestic. Proview, which owned the "iPad" trademark in several countries until they sold the rights to Apple, has been alleging shenanigans, specifically that part of the company never authorized the sale. Apple, for their part, says that everything is in order, and they have the signatures of the recalcitrant Shenzhen branch of Proview to prove it. A Chinese court found that while the ownership of the trademark was not yet able to be settled, there wasn't enough evidence to support a sales ban on the iPad. But now Proview has brought the court to California, alleging that Apple defrauded them of the trademark by approaching them as a fictional company: IP Application Development Ltd. — IPAD Ltd.

Border state safety secretary fired after massacre

MEXICO CITY (AP) ? The governor of a northern state where 44 inmates were massacred last week inside a prison has fired the state's public safety secretary.

Nuevo Leon Gov. Rodrigo Medina says Gen. Jaime Castaneda has been replaced by Gen. Javier del Real, who was deputy secretary.

Medina also said Friday that federal agents will help patrol around state prisons and aid with prison searches and raids whenever necessary.

Last week, 44 prisoners who belonged to the Gulf drug cartel were bludgeoned and stabbed to death by inmates from the rival Zetas cartel inside the Apodaca state prison. Authorities said the inmates were killed amid an escape by 30 members of the Zetas cartel.

More on the activity in Fresno's new home market - The Fresno ...

New home construction seems to be on an upswing in neighborhoods across the Valley. And builders are optimistic that the market is starting to turn. Today's story in The Bee tells you what some Fresno homebuilders have done to get through the downturn and who is buying new, but it doesn't cover everyone.

Here's a look at what other builders in town have done to attract buyers along with more from homebuyers that we couldn't squeeze into the final story.

  • In October, national builder Lennar Homes rolled out a new model in the Valley called the Versatillion - a three-bedroom, 2,286-square-foot house that comes with an extra bedroom suite that has a small living area, kitchenette and full bathroom for families taking in parents or other relatives.
  • People are financially strained these days and there are so many people living together that Lennar created a house to offer a separate living space for multi-generational households, Mike Miller, Lennar's division president for the Central Valley, said back then.
  • Granville Homes introduced its newest development called Sageberry at Copper River Ranch last summer. The cottage-style houses are small ranging in size from 1,300 square feet to 2,400 square feet for people who want a care-free lifestyle. Garages are hidden from street view and there is very little lawn maitenance required.
  • In May, Wilson Homes unveiled a line of smaller houses too called Elev8ions at Harlan Ranch with energy-saving features and appliances included. The houses are tailored to people who are on the go or who want a turn-key home that is ready to move in. The houses range in size from 1,200 square feet to nearly 1,600 square feet.

Kara Montelongo and her fiance, George Ruiz, wanted a new home when they started house-hunting last year. They each lived in their own one-bedroom apartment for a few years before deciding now was the time to buy a house.

They considered looking at lower-priced existing houses, but realized early on in their search that a new house is really what they wanted. They were lured by granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and an attic to McCaffrey Homes' Crownstone development in Clovis.

They paid $366,990 to have a four-bedroom, three-bathroom house built. The couple and Ruiz's 9-year-old son moved into the house in October.

"Being able to choose everything and have something that was brand new and never lived in before was something that was important to us," said Montelongo, who works in accounting. "It's nice that we didn't have any maintenance that we had to do and we could focus on decorating rather than home improvement."

Cost-Sharing Agreements: New Treasury Regulations - CLE ...

Why Attend?

In December, 2011, the Treasury issued final, temporary and proposed regulations on the transfer pricing implications and guidelines involving cost-sharing agreements (CSAs). The new regulations carry over a substantial portion of the 2009 temporary and proposed regulations (TD 9441) and adopt guidance included in the temporary regulation on the comparable uncontrolled transaction method. A CSA is an arrangement by which the participants agree to share the cost of developing one or more intangibles ("cost-sharing intangibles"). The regulations follow on the heels of several significant court cases such as Veritas Software Corp. v. Comm'r, 133 T.C. 297 (2009) and Xilinx Inc. v. Comm'r, 125 T.C. 37 (2005). The new CSA regulations play a key and critical role in the tax accounting process involving multi-national business operations in the development of intangibles and similar assets.

RB3D develops Hercule robotic exoskeleton, boosts strength without P90X

Sure, some folks could use a little extra help maneuvering in order to complete daily chores. But what about help with all of that heavy lifting? The folks at RB3D in France have been working with the French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA), ESME Sudria and CES LIST to develop a robotic exoskeleton that will aid in doing just that. Hercule, the aforementioned cobot-esque (collaborative robot) prototype, doesn't require any special training or skills to use. A person needing extra strength to carry that crate of supplies just wears the device and goes about his or her business with the added support of the exosuit. This particular model is powered electrically and will last about 20km (about 12.5 miles) if movement is kept at a regular walking pace. Weight limits, you ask? The Hercule boasts a carrying capacity of 100kg (220lbs) -- more HAL tech we've seen in aiding travelers in the past. Military and civil customers could get their hands on these as early as 2014, but for now, jump past the break for a look at one in action.

A Checklist for Purchasing Kitchen Appliances ... - kitchen remodeling

DishwasherChoosing appliances can be an exciting way to update your kitchen, but it can also be a struggle to decide which kitchen appliances to purchase. Many retail stores and websites have a wide variety when it comes to dishwashers, ovens, ranges and refrigerators, making it hard to narrow down your selection and choose just one. Use this checklist as you consider each individual appliance.

Is It In My Budget?

This is the most important question to ask yourself. If the price is too high and won?t fit in your budget, ski it entirely and move to the next item. There are so many different prices for appliances that it is always possible to find something that falls into your price bracket.

Will It Create a Cohesive Look?

This is especially important if you already have some of the key features planned or purchased in the kitchen. For example, if you like the look of the stainless steel oven but all your other appliances are white, it won?t match in the space.

Is It Energy Efficient?

Along with being better for the environment, energy efficient appliances will save you money each month on your energy bills.

By considering these three important factors you can narrow down your options and pick the best kitchen appliances for your own home.

When you need home appliances and kitchen remodeling accessories of all types, DirectBuy has a wide selection for you to choose from. You can purchase virtually everything you need for home improvement without paying retail markup.

LG unveils style-focused Optimus L3, L5 and L7 ahead of MWC

Android Central

Following the recent announcents of the Optimus Vu and Optimus LTE Tag, LG has taken the wraps off three more Android smartphones ahead of next week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The Optimus L3, L5 and L7 make up what the manufacturer calls its "L-style" series -- a series of smartphones for design-conscious consumers.

LG has outlined a new design philosophy to go along with these new products -- put simply, it's hoping you're after a slimmer, squarer handset of metal construction. From today's press release --

"L-Style’s  design philosophy is comprised of five aesthetic elements:  Modern Square Style for a comfortable grip, Floating Mass Technology for a slimmer look, Seamless Layout for a more intuitive arrangement of keys, Harmonized Design Contrast utilizing metallic accents and Sensuous Slim Shape that naturally draws one’s attention."

Eagle-eyed readers may remember the entry-level L3 from its brief appearance on a Swedish retailer's site a few weeks back -- the device was said to run Android 2.3 on a 3.2-inch display. That's been confirmed as part of LG's announcement today, though detailed hardware specs for all three devices are conspicuously absent.

In the absence of a spec list, we'll have to guess that L5 and the L7 are mid to high-end products. Both run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (behind LG's Optimus UI, of course), but the only specs LG is confirming at this stage are the screen sizes -- the L5 is a 4-incher, while the L7 is a little larger at 4.3. LG says the L3 is due in Europe this March, while the L5 and L7 will follow in the first half of the year.

We'll bring you more on all of LG's new handsets, including the L-style series, from the show floor next week.

What Does a Software Developer Do? | Gunzspot

Those who create the software we use today for every function of our business and personal lives are software developers, also called software technicians or coders. Learning how to become a software developer is like finding out how to speak a new language that will enable you to communicate with computers. Each and every time you open up Internet Explorer, Opera, Chrome, or Safari, whenever you edit a document in WordPerfect, and each silent victory scored by your malware software has a software developer to thank for it. A large amount of software developers went to university a few words concerning online course.

As personal computers joined into the day-to-day grind of living, computer developers became essential to modern society. Software experts were much more difficult to find in those days and were always ahead of the curve in the latest technology. The demand for software engineers has exploded during the last two decades, due to our reliance upon technology. Mobile computing has caused that demand for software developers to go up all the more.

How Do You Become a Software Developer?

Anyone with a good history in the most popular programming languages, can be successful as a software developer. Organizations both large and small have a need for experienced programmers to lessen the load on their workers. A qualified developer with at least a Bachelor of Science degree can receive starting wages of $80,000 or more with a start-up firm or established computer company. If you choose this field, you can almost certainly expect to have a good healthcare plan, good holiday time, and many other benefits. The work settings are generally relaxed, imaginative, and pleasant.

To make it big as a software developer, you must develop both your analytical thinking skills and ingenuity. If the project you are assigned to work on requires teamwork, you will have to have the communications and leadership skills essential to adapt. It?s not unusual for these jobs to call for long or unusual hours. Apart from the the sporadic emergency, developers usually have a reasonably comfortable job with great benefits. If your managers like your work, they may promote you or provide you with a pay increase.

Returning to school will increase your ability to make an impression on employers both in the initial employment interview and after you?ve begun work. Online courses can significantly facilitate your capability to earn a degree. As with any other degree field, obtaining your degree requires diligence and dedication. Understanding how programming languages work can be a full time effort. You will definitely become familiar with many different programming languages in the course of your study. Good results in this industry starts with a college degree.

Digital Film Switch Could Signal End Of Historic Movie Theaters

BUFFALO, N.Y. ? The license plate on movie projectionist Arnie Herdendorf's Buick is 35MM MAN, a nod to his work in the booth at the 1925 Palace Theatre, with its velvet-draped stage and chandeliered mezzanine.

When he drove recently to a multiplex to watch as its film projectors were swapped out for new digital ones, the sight of old 35 mm workhorses "stacked up like wounded soldiers" had him wondering how long his title ? or job ? would be around.

The questions are even bigger for historic movie houses themselves.

With the future of motion pictures headed quickly toward an all-digital format played only on pricey new equipment, will the theaters be around? Or will they be done in by the digital revolution that will soon render inadequate the projectors that have flickered and ticked with a little-changed technology for more than 120 years?

"Our guess is by the end of 2013 there won't be any film distributed anymore," said John Fithian, president and chief executive of the National Association of Theater Owners.

The Hollywood studios' industry-wide conversion from 35 mm film to digital satisfies modern-day demands for crisp clarity, cost savings and special effects like 3-D. And for big-budget theaters where new releases occupy multiple screens, installing digital projectors is a no-brainer. Already, about 60 percent have converted in the United States, at a price of $70,000 to $80,000 a screen, Fithian said.

But for the community-owned Palace and other small and historic movie houses, the merging of nostalgia with high-tech is a dauntingly expensive proposition. Yet one, most agree, that is critical if they are to keep attracting audiences to their light bulb-studded marquees. The cost is more than double the price of a top-of-the-line film projector.

"The Riviera Theatre is listed on the historic register, but we are not a museum," Executive Director Frank Cannata said from the 1927 theater north of Buffalo, "so it's important that we stay current ... and staying current isn't always affordable, as we're all finding out."

An estimated 500 to 750 historic theaters currently show movies, according to the Theatre Historical Society of America, though it adds no one has formally researched the number and the estimate is conservative.

"This is another major threat to these theaters which were largely rescued and restored by grass-roots local efforts," said Karen Colizzi Noonan, president of the THS, which records and preserves theaters' architectural and cultural history. "It is so sad that after all that hard work and dedication these groups now face another huge challenge just to survive."

And survival means doing whatever they can to raise the cash to convert.

Supporters of the privately owned Davis Theatre in Higginsville, Mo., are vying for a $50,000 prize in a Reader's Digest contest that would help pay for digital equipment for the 500-seat main auditorium. They were in second place at the start of February, with a month of voting to go.

"It's a long haul but it's encouraging to see a town come together," said Fran Schwarzer, who, with her husband, George, was nearing retirement age and sunk their savings into buying the 1934 theater to keep it from closing in 1998.

The couple added three screens in 2005 so they could show more first-run movies, always viewing the venture as more community service than money-maker in the small town east of Kansas City.

"If we had known then what we know now" about the swift onset of digital, "we would never have gone into debt more to put in three more auditoriums," Schwarzer said.

The Riviera will show movies with its two carbon arc lamphouses and projectors for as long as it can, Cannata said, while exploring funding for the digital replacements. If it can't, it will have to do away with the popular second-run movies offered at discount rates.

While live shows and other programming would keep the Riviera going, other theaters are trying to stave off closing with fundraisers, like the taco supper planned to raise money for the Onarga Theater in eastern Illinois. The 1937 theater that boasts being the first south of Chicago to show movies with sound has invested in its seating, concessions and sound systems in recent years, but can't afford the switch to digital projection.

North of Buffalo, the nonprofit, community-owned Palace is looking into loans and grants for a $75,000 digital set up, but it's also going to have to upgrade its electrical system to accommodate the new equipment, said Phil Czarnecki, vice president of the board. He can't help but think of all the restoration of the building ? a replica of the Paramount Theater in New York City that mixes Art Deco and Italian Renaissance style ? that could be accomplished with such an outlay.

The small theaters already are feeling pressure from the digital conversions taking place all around them. Instead of waiting three weeks for a modern multiplex to make a movie print available, it now often takes six or seven weeks because there are fewer 35 mm copies in circulation. That's more than enough time for the pool of potential ticket-buyers to lose interest or see the movie somewhere else.

It's not just the cost of digital projection that concerns Edward Summer, president of the Buffalo Niagara Film Festival. He worries that once older movie houses make the switch, they'll do away with their 35 mm projectors, something he says would be "a hideous mistake."

Summer sees a potential tourism niche in historic theaters showing classic movies ? and he worries that existing films that won't be digitized will be forever lost to audiences if the equipment isn't there to show them.

"Every motion picture made between 1894 and right this minute is on 35 mm film and those films not only still exist, but those film prints are the only way to see them," Summer said.

"It's not either/or," Summer said of the two projection technologies, "it's both/and."

The Palace's Herdendorf doesn't own a computer and isn't sure if his 17 years of splicing and dicing reels of film and threading them through a platter projection system will translate to the new technology with its pocket-size hard drives. He knows what to do if film breaks, but not if a computer freezes.

The Riviera eventually plans to display one of its 35 mm carbon arc projectors in the lobby, Cannata said, "so people can take a look at how films were shown at one time."

The Davis Theatre's Schwarzer jokes that her place's four projectors will become boat anchors. What's important, she said, is that the theater's doors stay open.

"We have such wonderful memories of this theater as children," she said. "You kind of like to think that kids that come now will have some of those memories, too."

Kevin Durant Scores 51 Points: Thunder Top Nuggets, 124-118

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Kevin Durant scored a career-best 51 points for the top performance in the NBA this season, Russell Westbrook added 40 and Serge Ibaka had his first career triple-double as the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Denver Nuggets 124-118 in overtime Sunday night.

Durant hit a 3-pointer and drove for a dunk to tie the game with 4.4 seconds left in regulation, then used the extra period to chalk up the first 50-point game of the two-time scoring champion's career.

He walked slowly over to his mother, seated courtside, and gave her a kiss and a hug when the final horn sounded.

Ibaka added 14 points, 15 rebounds and 11 blocks to become the 14th player in franchise history with a triple-double.

Arron Afflalo scored 27 points and Andre Miller had 21 points and 10 assists for Denver, which had a shot to win at the end of regulation.

Ty Lawson, who missed a 3-pointer with 7 seconds left, also couldn't connect on an off-balance jumper from the foul line at the buzzer after pump-faking Westbrook into the air.

Westbrook hit a 3 on Oklahoma City's opening possession of overtime, and the Nuggets committed five turnovers to squander their chances in the extra period.

Fans in the sellout crowd chanted "MVP!" as Durant hit two free throws in the final seconds to surpass 50 points for the first time in his career and put the finishing touches on Oklahoma City's ninth straight win at home.

Reserve Rudy Fernandez (lower back strain) joined starters Danilo Gallinari (ankle) and Nene (calf) on the Nuggets' injury list, and coach George Karl went with his 13th different lineup of the season in 32 games. Denver lost for the eighth time in its last 10 games. The last two have been particularly wrenching, by one point at Memphis and then an overtime thriller at Oklahoma City.

It was a wildly back-and-forth game from the start, with big swings in either direction.

The Nuggets took an early lead before allowing a 16-2 Oklahoma City run that featured a pair of 3-pointers from Durant and Westbrook's driving dunk. Afflalo then had two jumpers and a finger roll in transition as Denver scored the final 10 points to lead 27-25.

That was only the start of the Nuggets' big run, though.

Reserve Kosta Koufos, forced into action after Al Harrington picked up three fouls, had a three-point play and two layups set up by Andre Miller while Denver outscored the Thunder 29-7 in a span of about 7 1/2 minutes. Chris Andersen's fast-break layup made it 46-32 with 6:29 left before halftime ? Oklahoma City's largest deficit at Chesapeake Energy Arena this season.

It still didn't take the Thunder long to wipe it away.

Durant and Westbrook scored the next six points, and Oklahoma City went on a 20-0 run spanning halftime to get back ahead. James Harden's 3-pointer got the lead down to 58-53 by halftime, and Westbrook scored the first three baskets of the second half to put the Thunder ahead.

Durant added a two-handed slam off Westbrook's alley-oop and a right-handed fast-break jam in a span of three possessions, and Oklahoma City led 65-58 with 6:04 left in the third.

Then it was Denver's turn again, rallying back to take a brief lead on Miller's layup with under 2 minutes left in the third. The Nuggets kept it going into the fourth, getting back-to-back 3-pointers from Harrington just after Durant and Westbrook re-entered for a 93-84 advantage with 8:50 to play.

Oklahoma City whittled away at the deficit, finally pulling even at 102 when Westbrook connected on a jumper from the foul line with 2:52 to play. Ibaka swatted Lawson's shot 20 seconds later for his 10th block in regulation.

Lawson hit a 3-pointer and Harrington two free throws for a 111-106 Denver lead with 43 seconds left, but Durant hit a second-chance 3-pointer from the top of the key and a driving dunk with 4.4 seconds left to tie it.

Notes: Thunder reserve Lazar Hayward was out with a fractured left orbital floor after being poked in the eye late in Oklahoma City's win against Golden State on Friday. ... The Nuggets (103.4) and Thunder (101.6) are two of three teams averaging more than 100 points per game, trailing only Miami (103.7) in the NBA rankings. ... Lenny Wilkens, Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp and Jack Sikma are among the 12 players with triple-doubles for the Seattle SuperSonics. Westbrook is the only one other than Ibaka to do it with the Thunder.

Fashion Week Focus: Susan Sokol Talks Style, Motherhood, and ...

Susan Sokol is one of those rare people who knew what she was passionate about from a young age. That passion was fashion, and it has led her to some of the most recognizable labels in the world?Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Michael Kors, and Vera Wang.

Today, she is the President and COO of J. Mendel, a brand that she has transformed since she took the helm in 2008. Not only is Sokol one of the most successful women in the fashion industry, she is also a mother, and an inspiration to aspiring fashionistas. From organizing prom parties to mentoring this writer on how to follow your passions, Sokol is an indefatigable role model for women. In recognition of her multifarious achievements?including and especially her efforts in the fight against women?s cancers?she will be awarded City of Hope?s Spirit of Life Award this May. We were lucky enough to sit down with her to discuss the evolution of her astounding career, and what she?s learned on her ascent to the top of her industry.

You have four decades of experience in the fashion world. I wonder how you got started?

I started right after college at Calvin Klein, in the early 1970s. At the time, it was a start-up business. I ended up spending 23 years there. It was such an incredible experience because I learned every aspect of running a fashion brand, from product development, to merchandising, to sourcing, to marketing and public relations, to sales. I learned how to expand a business globally.

Eventually, I grew to be the president of the Calvin Klein Collection, which was and still is the umbrella for the entire brand. It set the tone and direction for everything the company did, and because of my role, I was an integral part of every expansion. Through it all, I worked very closely with Calvin Klein and Barry Schwartz, who were mentors to me.

Why did you decide to leave the brand in the mid-1990s?

I hadn?t taken time off since a very young age, and I was really burned out. I had a family, and I wanted to spend more time with them. Even when my son was born, after four weeks, I went right back to work.

How long did you stay out of the workforce?

I took about a year off. During the time, I pursued a lot of personal interests, which was a lot of fun. When I came back to work, I had a lot more perspective on life, and what I wanted to do.

After returning to the workforce, you held very influential positions with several other design houses, including Michael Kors and Vera Wang. How did you end up at J. Mendel in 2008?

A friend who is a stylist introduced me to Gilles Mendel, the heir of the line, and we really hit it off.

After all of your years working in fashion, how is J. Mendel different?

It?s such an incredible brand, with such a pristine and luxury positioning. Although its heritage stems from fur, the company introduced ready-to-wear in 2002. It was a natural transition from unapologetic luxury to beautiful evening gowns. We?ve really been evolving in these challenging economic times, and have adapted by expanding our product offering and the price range of our lines yet still remaining luxury. More than anything, J. Mendel is a house of emotions. You sense the women in the clothing.

Did you always know that you wanted to work in the fashion world?

I?m a native New Yorker?I grew up on Central Park West and 86th?and from a young age, I was surrounded by retail. My father was a textile merchant, and some of his best friends were garment center people. I was always surrounded by fashion at home, but I also had a real love for clothing. I was glued to fashion magazines, and I loved to dress up. When I went to school, I studied English, and I thought that I was going to be a teacher. But fashion was my first love, and it?s where I ended up.

How has it been balancing such an amazing career with being a mother?

I started my career a long time ago. My son is 29, and I have a stepson who was 13 at the time when I got married. When I became President of the Calvin Klein Collection, I was a brand new mother. I found myself really conflicted about it, because I?m the type of person who gives 1,000 percent to everything I do. I was so torn for so many years trying to balance work and my family to my standards.

But I?m so grateful I kept my career. I have an incredible partner in my husband, who is so supportive, and helps me to balance my life. I eventually learned to prioritize quality over length of time. If I came home at 7pm, I would spend the two hours with my son before he went to bed really focusing on him. We would do a project together, or just spend time reading.

Have you had to give up a lot to be so successful?

It?s funny, but I find that I have to give up a lot more now, later in my career. I have to attend more events and spend more time at work. I?ve never been busier. But when I was a young mother, my priorities were very clear, so in some ways, it made it easier to manage my time. And having a child never felt like giving anything up.

What would you have done differently?

In retrospect, it might have been easier to have a second child. Then my son would have had a companion to spend time with. But I actually wasn?t able to get pregnant after my son was born, so we had to accept the situation for what it was. I feel very lucky to have the life I?ve led, and I don?t think that my son lacked for anything. We were always the type of parents who made sure that all of his friends felt welcome at our home. We had the senior prom party at our house in the Hamptons, for example. However, even though it?s been tough at times, if I had to do it all over again, I?d do it the same way.

Do you think your career has helped you to be a better mother?

My career has definitely defined me as a person. When I was a new mother, I struggled with that. I wanted to be the good stay-at-home mommy that all of my friends were. But my husband would always tell me that so much of who I am is what I have done with my career. And it has defined what kind of mother I am as well. It got me involved with my son?s school, whether it was being the class mom, or organizing a bake sale, or fundraising. I knew how to do all of this because I knew how to run a business, so I could apply my skills to mothering as well.

If nothing else, it?s made me a really good role model for him, because through me, he saw what it meant to have a great career with a balanced life. He also learned how to really respect women, which is an important gift that women of my generation gave to the sons that we raised.

Was there anyone who has mentored you along the way, and in turn, have you mentored many people?

Calvin Klein and Barry Schwartz were probably my greatest mentors, because I was with them for so many years. They taught me everything I know about running a business. Today, I absolutely try to mentor as many women as possible. Not only do I speak to people outside of my field, but I also try to create a work environment where other women?and men?feel comfortable approaching me with problems and questions. It?s not who you are as an individual that makes you successful. It?s how you work within a group. It?s the people whom you decide to surround yourself with. I try to hire people who have strengths that I don?t have. I want them to be comfortable, and happy. I want them to be able to ask me for advice. I try to be understanding, and to give them the best advice I can based on my years of experience.

Being that you?re such a successful woman, have you always been proactive about your own financial well-being?

Absolutely. I have always been involved in the decision making about our investments, our estate planning, how we control our destiny as a family. I?m the kind of person who learns along the way. If I need to figure it out, I teach myself, on my own terms.

What advice would you give to women trying to learn more about financial literacy?

What I would say to other women is?ask the questions. Don?t be afraid. If you don?t understand something around finance, figure out how to navigate the road map.

When I first got started at Calvin Klein, it was a start-up, so I learned from the bottom up. But I got so far ahead because I really made sure I understood how the finances of the company worked and I asked questions when I didn?t understand something. I didn?t want to just sit back, and wait for someone else to answer the question. Women need to take the initiative, and be proactive about their own financial well being.

What advice do you have for young women?

I?ve always been passionate about what I was doing in fashion, ever since a young age. But more than anything, no matter what industry you?re in, if you want to be successful, you have to work hard. Work ethic is so important. If you work hard and feel passionately about what you?re doing, you?ll work it out.
