PGT's Par 3: Watson, Fowler struggle in clutch

It?s a day late, but welcome into this week?s Par 3. For those newcomers to the P3, we take a look at six players here. Three of them would have only lost to Usain Bolt in the 200 meters by three seconds. The others? They didn?t even get out of the gate.

3 Up

Webb Simpson: The long putter brigade may have a new leader in golf?s AFL-CIO union equivalent. Simpson has won twice in three weeks and followed up the first win of his career with an impressive playoff win in Boston. He?s now a lock for East Lake and will be in control of his own destiny for the Tour Championship.

Ernie Els: Els deserves a break after the last three weeks. He made sure he got into the playoffs at the Wyndham Championship, then squeaked into the Deutsche Bank. Needing a 17th or better, he birdied the last hole to get into the BMW Championship. Then Els delivered the money quote about the FedEx Cup in its 5-year existence that may entice Depends to get a piece of the action.

Thomas Bjorn: Bjorn turned 40 in February after his first win of the year, had an exorcism with a top-5 at Royal St. George?s in the Open and has now won in consecutive weeks on the European Tour. He?s reached the top-30 and going to enjoy the fruits of his renaissance in 2012.

3 Down

Bubba Watson: Watson struggled on the final 27 holes of the weekend at TPC Boston, playing them in 4-over at a course that lends itself to impressive weekends by its champions. Instead of shooting the 5-year winning average of 64 on Monday, he was ten worse. It is Watson?s first top-20 since New Orleans, though.

Rickie Fowler: Once again, Rickie Fowler and Bubba Watson play poorly when both in contention. It?s an odd symbiosis, but Fowler shot 77 on Monday to fade from view quickly in Boston. Fowler needs a good finish in two weeks to get to the Tour Championship.

Nick Watney: Fowler?s final round 77 was a death of paper cuts and leaking oil, but Nick Watney surrendered his championship hopes at the Deutsche Bank early on Sunday with an 11 on the par-5 2nd hole. Not much more to say other than it?s a temporary dip for one of the best on tour in 2011.
