SURVEY

How did you get involved with GeekGirlCon?
One of my best friends mentioned it to me and said that they were still looking for volunteers.

What are you looking forward to about GeekGirlCon the most?
I am really looking forward to seeing the diversity of geekdom among our volunteers and patrons.

What are your main areas of Geekdom, and how were you introduced to them?
I am definitely a technology geek. I started using computers when I was four or five years old and have since been very fond of them. When I was 12 I started learning HTML and got into web design, and in high school I learned how to repair PC?s and about networking protocol. I just immersed myself early.

Geeky thing you?re most excited for this year?
I was offered an interview as a PHP programming developer, so I?m definitely crossing my fingers for that.

Dream Vacation?
I want to travel, period. There are so many places I want to see, but at the top would be Spain and Italy.

Who was your first fictional crush, and why?
I used to be quite the anime fangirl, so I want to say my first crush was on Kagato from Tenchi Universe.

Fictional Character that you most relate to, and why?

Tsukimi from Princess Jellyfish. We sort of look alike, have unusual interests, and don?t quite fit in with the masses. Like her, I?m really shy and sort of awkward.

Favorite Video Game?

Definitely Tetris.

Favorite Table Top/Board game?
Scrabble

Microsoft or Apple?
Linux, actually. I?m a huge fan of Gentoo and Debian.

Gadget you couldn?t live without?
I NEED my PC.

If you could have dinner with one person (from any time period), who would it be?
Linux Torvalds (creator of Linux)

You have one time-machine, you can use it to either go back in time or to the future. What year would you choose?
I?ve seen so instances in media when people go back or forward in time that I honestly don?t want to; I?m afraid I?ll do or say something to break the space-time continuum.

How do you feel about the terms ?Geek Girl? and ?Girl Geek??
I?ve self-identified as a geek girl since I was 12 or 13, and at that time, it seemed to have a much more negative connotation than it does now. I am thrilled to see more girls embracing the geek title with no shame.

Do you think the definition of ?geek? has changed/evolved over the past 30 years?
The term definitely had a more negative light 30 years ago (as shown by the media). Most ?geeks? in school were picked on, bullied, shunned, etc. However, this has helped us come together to form our own community where we can appreciate each other?s? tastes and learn more about ourselves. It?s nice to feel like I belong without having to hide my interests and personality.
